The Food & Drink Industry is a major water user – it is estimated that the industry uses 690 mega litres of water per day, comprising of:
- 430 mega litres of public water supply (10% of all industrial use), and
- 260 mega litres a day from direct abstraction (10% of industrial abstraction)
With such high usage rates, Defra identified the Food & Drink Industry as being in a position to make a significant contribution towards the country’s sustainability as laid out in the Food Industry Sustainability Strategy (FISS).
The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) and resource efficiency experts WRAP, jointly manage the Federation House Commitment, which aims to contribute to a reduction in overall water usage across the Food and Drink Industry by 20% by the year 2020.
