Who can join the Federation House Commitment (FHC)?
Any food and drink manufacturer that wants to improve its environmental sustainability by reducing water waste.
Why only food and drink manufacturers?
FHC was initiated in response to Defra’s Food Industry Sustainability Strategy. Water usage reduction is an important issue for all industries, in particular those involved with manufacturing. If you are a trade association or company from a different sector and are interested in a similar commitment, please contact WRAP.
How is the 20% reduction measured?
FHC measures its “20 by 20” water usage reduction against a 2007 baseline. WRAP reports on annual water use (excluding water that goes into the end product) to show progress towards FISS targets, and takes production levels into consideration, so as to accurately reflect improved water efficiency even in the event of growing operations. FHC members will provide data on their water usage to Hyder Consulting, which will aggregate and report on collective progress annually.
Why is Hyder administering the scheme?
With its water efficiency expertise, and experience of working with food and drink companies, Hyder has been appointed by WRAP to help FHC members by providing expert advice on implementation measures. Hyder also acts as an administrator of the commitment.
